Piedt finished with 45 wickets in the 2013/2014-season at an average of 19.93, a superb return by the off-spinner. He is still on the mend following shoulder surgery.
Van Zyl was selected by the SA team after scoring 933 runs in the 2013/2014-season at an average of 58.31 while batting at number three.
Levi, in the Sunfoil Series-wilderness for more than a season, will return to open the batting with Andrew Puttick.
Levi scored 121 in his previous four-day game for the Cobras in Bloemfontein back in 2012/2013.
“Some consider Richard a one-day player, but I’m not one of them,” said Justin Ontong, the Cobras captain.
“He is desperate to score runs. Richard would be full of confidence (following his 392 runs in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge).”
The captain added that the Cobras scored 11 centuries in the previous Sunfoil Series, but the hosts needed to accelerate at a reasonable tempo to ensure enough time to bowl out the opposition twice.
Ontong was not overly concerned about the attack, saying the Cobras boast two players in Beuran Hendricks and Rory Kleinveldt who can be match-winners.
Hendricks captured nine for 75 in the first match of the previous season against the Sunfoil Dolphins, while Kleinveldt finished with nine for 89 against The Unlimited Titans at Paarl.
Both are national players who have lost ground in the race for the Cricket World Cup not due to design, but purely by accident, as both were side-lined for at least two months because of injuries.
“We need to be patient with GF. He is a young bowler and still on a learning curve, but we saw what he could do in the Ram Slam T20-competition,” said Ontong.
The pitch at Newlands is expected to be slow and might not be conducive to seam, but the team management will assess it on Thursday morning.
The Cobras team is: Justin Ontong (capt), Richard Levi, Andrew Puttick, Omphile Ramela, Yaseen Vallie, Dane Vilas, Aviwe Mgijima, Beuran Hendricks, Rory Kleinveldt, GF Linde, Dane Paterson, SA Engelbrecht, Mthokozisi Shezi.
