South Africa’s women’s cricket team bounced back with a vengeance at Newlands today, beating the West Indian women convincingly by 7 wickets with 9.1 overs to spare.
South Africa put West Indies in to bat after winning the toss, and were soon amongst the wickets. After Samaroo was out to Ismail for two, the key moment of the match came in the 13th over when precocious teenage West Indian prodigy Stafanie Taylor “failed” for the first time - she was caught and bowled by Sunette Loubser for 38 - taking her run tally for the tour to 208 for once out. After Ismail struck again to remove Lavine for 44, South Africa’s spinners, well supported by Letsoalo with 1 for 23 off her 10 overs, bowled with guile to restrict the Windies to 182 runs off their ration of 50 overs, despite Daley wading in towards the end of the innings with 38 not out off 51 balls. The outstanding bowling figures were recorded by Dane van Niekerk with 3 for 25 off ten overs, but Charlene van der Westhuizen with 1 for 20 off her ten and Sunette Loubser with 2 for 35 off 8 also joined the party. The South African bowlers stuck to a well thought out strategy, bowling to a line on and outside the off-stump to deprive the powerful but rather flat-footed West Indian batsmen of the opportunity to hit in the arc.
When South Africa batted, Kirstie Thomson and Trisha Chetty put together an opening stand of 38 off 54 balls. Thomson survived a chance at 18, but she and Chetty both fell to Selman (Chetty 18 off 30 and Thomson 22 off 40) and South Africa was 44 for 2 after 13.2 overs. Cri-Zelda Brits (31 off 69 balls) and Mignon du Preez (68 not out off 80 balls) then produced a match winning partnership of 79 off 17 overs, exceeding their steady stand of 61 runs off 122 balls on Friday. The South African innings then accelerated, with Alicia Smith (35 off 27 balls) joining man of the match du Preez in an unbeaten stand of 63. The total of 186 for 3 was reached in 40.5 overs with the Windies fielding deteriorating and their team looking tired and du Preezed!
