England seek to break Newlands 'duck'

18 November 2009 - England have yet to win a limited overs match against a South African team at Sahara Park Newlands but they have contributed to some memorable and exciting matches.

Going into the third MTN one-day international on Friday, November 27, England have played three and lost three against South Africa. They also lost a 50-overs match against Western Province in January 1996 which was arranged after the early end of a Test match.

England's only one-day win in the shadow of Table Mountain was in a 2003 World Cup match against Pakistan in which James Anderson announced himself as a swing bowler of special talent.

England's first one-day international in Cape Town marked three significant one-day debuts - Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock and Paul Adams. It was a stand between Kallis and Pollock which enabled South Africa to recover from a poor start, while Pollock's bowling enabled South Africa to gain an
exciting six-run win.

Four years later it was even closer, when South Africa won by a single run during the Standard Bank triangular series. Kallis again played a significant role, top-scoring with 43 and bowling the crucial last over, conceding only seven runs when England needed nine to win.

Remarkably, just two days later England crashed to defeat against Zimbabwe, for whom fast bowler Henry Olonga produced a career-best performance.

England's most recent one-day match at Sahara Park Newlands five seasons ago produced some superb batting from Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Justin Kemp and, for England, Kevin Pietersen.
