Dayyaan Galiem, GF Linde, the skipper Qaasim Adams, Matthew Kleinveldt, Junaid Dawood, Tshepo Moreki and Mpilo Njoloza possess the pedigree and are multi-skilled players who can propel the Cape champions back to the top.
“In 2009/2010, we won the domestic double. What we need if we want to repeat those performances, is the work ethic. We need to take responsibilities at every practice and set goals for ourselves,” said Nackerdien.
“If one player does not perform, others must stand up and take responsibility. In that season, Qaasim, Dane Piedt, Dane Paterson, Beuran Hendricks and Rowan Richards stood tall,” he said.
Nackerdien said the team boast enough players to power Western Province to 450 and take 20 wickets. “But we must answer the questions about consistently repeating those performances.
“When it is your day, you must cash in (and convert useful scores into substantial centuries),” Nackerdien emphasized.
Western Province has been close to glory the past two seasons. They lost in the Sunfoil Three-Day Cup final in 2015/2016 and was only eclipsed by Northerns in the final Three-Day cup match of the round robin phase in 2016/2017.
With regards to fielding, Nackerdien said Western Province has toiled hard on their catching in every form or shape, as well as their throw-ins.
Part of the success of fielding is to enjoy the art and to want the ball coming your way, he said.
“If you don’t enjoy it, you should not be on the field.”
Moreki will have a point to prove after he was recently omitted from the World Sport Betting Cape Cobras’ starting line-up.
Both he and Njoloza have the skills-set to produce five-wicket hauls regularly.
Njoloza captured a hat-trick in his maiden franchise match and Western Province fans would want to see the highly talented swing bowler get his mojo back.
Dawood and Linde are slow bowlers who can spin a web of deceit around most batsmen.
Adams is not in the twilight of his first-class career and his performances the past three seasons are certainly testimony to that fact.
The opening Sunfoil Three-Day Cup match against Border starts on Thursday 26th October.
The Western Province squad for the Border-clash is: Qaasim Adams (capt), Matthew Kleinveldt, Derek Mitchell, Neo Mlumbi, Dayyaan Galiem, Michael Loubser, Taariq Chiecktey, Carlos Koyana, GF Linde, Junaid Dawood, Mpilo Njoloza, Renaldo Meyer, Tshepo Moreki
