The playing rules will permit the respective coaches to select a batting XI and a fielding/bowling XI that will allow full use of the players selected by the public.
Following player workload analysis and careful assessment, the CSA Medical Committee has requested Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander to be withdrawn from the squads’ while AB de Villiers will miss out due to surgery needed on his left hand.
"AB fractured his left hand during the IPL in 2011 after which he had a plate inserted to assist with recovery. The plate has started to cause discomfort in his hand and will be surgically removed in the first week of January. The recovery period is usually 3-4 weeks and he should be ready in time for the series against Australia in February," explained Proteas Team Manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee.
All four players were selected by the public. They will, however, be in attendance at Sahara Park Newlands during the Cell C Festival of Cricket.
The Cell C Festival of Cricket is an exciting new event on the South African domestic cricket calendar that will see cricket and entertainment go hand in hand.
Award winning artists such as Prime Circle, Jack Parrow, BlackByrd, The Marc Beling Band and The Graeme Watkins Project will be entertaining fans over the three days.
The festival kicks off on Friday, 03 January with the Blue Label Telecoms Proteas taking on the Absa Springboks in a T20 encounter.
On Saturday 04 January, two exciting cricket matches will take place. The first will see the nation’s best women players competing in the Momentum Women’s invitational T20 match followed by the Momentum Multiply State of Origin clash between the North and South teams.
The Festival concludes on Sunday with an amazing opening round of the RAM SLAM T20 Challenge that will feature all six franchises in a triple header.
Tickets for all three days are available from www.ticketpros.co.za, the Sahara Park Newlands Ticket Office or at Postnet Outlets. Ticket prices range from R80-R150 with a 33% discount on offer for fans who purchase tickets for all three days.
Chairperson of the Western Province Scorers Association (WPSA) Peter Le Grange who collapsed on Friday 27 December 2013 at the age of 52 will be buried on Saturday, 04 January 2014. The church service will be held at Bergvliet Roman Catholic Church (Bergvliet Road, Bergvliet) from 10h00am.
Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) expresses its sadness at the passing of Mr. Peter Le Grange, chairman of the Western Province Cricket Scorers Association (WPCSA) on Friday, 27 December 2013 at the age of 52.
Mr. Le Grange suffered from flu on Christmas Eve and a sky high blood pressure before collapsing on Friday.
“It is really sad to learn of the demise of Peter Le Grange. He was very instrumental in the WPCSA and our Cricket South Africa (CSA) matches in Cape Town. On behalf of WPCA and rest of the cricket family I extend our sympathies to his wife, his two kids and to his colleagues and friends. WPCA will miss him dearly,” commented WPCA General Manager Nabeal Dien.

JEAN DE VILLIERS’ captaincy skills will be put to a new test when he leads a Springbok XI in their T20 Challenge match against the Proteas at Sahara Park Newlands on Friday, 3 January 2014.
This match (18h00 CAT start) will be the highlight of the opening day of the Cell C Festival of Cricket which also includes the North vs. South T20 Challenge, sponsored by Momentum Multiply, on Saturday, 4 January 2014 and the opening round of the RAM SLAM T20, featuring all six franchises on Sunday, 5 January 2014.
There will also be signing sessions, musical entertainment and a host of other fun activities.
The Springboks have named the following XI for this historic encounter: Jean de Villiers (captain), Willem Alberts, Bismarck du Plessis, Butch James, Fabian Juries, Tiaan Liebenberg, Willie le Roux, Victor Matfield, Frans Steyn, Flip van der Merwe, Franco van der Merwe.
“We are really looking forward to this historic match,” said De Villiers. “We are all very keen cricket supporters and we would like to urge all supporters to come out to Newlands and share in a fun evening and cheer on your favourite team.”
Former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad has been appointed as Manager of the Springbok XI.
“This is a very talented group of men and I’m really excited to see how they perform against some of the top cricketers in the world,” said Skinstad.
Most of the players attended schools with strong cricketing traditions such as Grey College, Maritzburg College, Paarl Gymnasium and Paul Roos Gymnasium before opting to pursue rugby careers.
Former Springbok captain Victor Matfield was good enough as a fast bowler and big-hitting batsman to earn provincial age group colours while Butch James is a multi-talented sportsman.
Although the Springbok XI will start the match as underdogs, two things are certain: the likes of Flip van der Merwe, Bismarck du Plessis and Willem Alberts should have little difficulty in clearing the boundary ropes while others such as Willie le Roux and Fabian Juries should be masters of sharp running between the wickets.
Tickets can be purchased through www.ticketpros.co.za, the Sahara Park Newlands Ticket Office or at Postnet Outlets. There is a discount on a season ticket for all three days.
