Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) welcomes Mark Khoabane as the newly appointed KFC Mini Cricket Coordinator effective from 01 September 2014. Mark takers over the reigns of former Mini Cricket Coordinator Thulani Zideba.
Mark has been involved in the cricket fraternity for quite a number of years. He obtains a Level 2 and Sport Management qualifications under his belt. He was the Mini Cricket Zonal Convener for Nyanga township and attended the KFC Mini Cricket National Seminar in 2007. He has also coached various Western Province Cricket Provincial youth teams from Under 11 to Under 17 between 2001 and 2012.
"Mark is well known to the structures of Western Province Cricket having been involved for many years in coaching with a particular passion for township coaching. I believe he has big boots to fill given Thulani's success in this portfolio but I'm also confident that he will bring his own skills to this portfolio and continue to grow our base in the Western Province", WPCA General Manager Nabeal Dien said.
Mark's first task in his new role is the annual KFC Mini Cricket Provincial Seminar that will take place at Sahara Park Newlands on Friday, 05 September 2014.

Former Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) staff member and KFC Mini-Cricket Co-Ordinator, Thulani Zideba got the best farewell gift at the 17th Annual KFC Mini-Cricket national seminar as he was awarded with the KFC Mini Cricket Co-Ordinator of the Year award.
Cricket players, a paralympic gold, bronze and silver medalist and nine-time Boston Marathon winner, Ernst van Dyk and cricket coaches were among the guest speakers at the seminar held in Port Alfred from 03rd to 06th July 2014.
Zideba was honoured with the award after countless hours of hard work and dedication to the programme. Zideba said receiving the award was a great honour.
"It is nice to know that the hard work I have put in is recognised. I am really happy about the award and I am proud of the work I have done for WPCA particularly the KFC Mini Cricket programme. It is indeed an honour for me to be given this award by Cricket South Africa (CSA)."
Zideba added that the award allowed him to finish his career at the Association and as the KFC Mini-Cricket Co-Ordinator on a high note as he left the programme for a better job opportunity.
“I hope the KFC Mini-Cricket programme will continue to produce stellar players and I hope those involved will keep up the hard work.”
The seminar attracted 154 coaches and Co-Ordinators from across the country, where the past season was reviewed and planning for the next season was done. The seminar was lauded as a success by those in attendance.
Proteas U-19 World Champion Sibononelo Makhanya reportedly said that being at the seminar took him back to his mini-cricket days. His team mate Yaseen Valli was also at the seminar, as was The Unlimited Titans’ head coach, Rob Walters and Proteas’ players Marchant de Lange and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
The annual KFC Mini Cricket Provincial Festival will be taking place at Sahara Park Newlands this coming Friday, 21st of February 2014 starting at 14h00.
More than a thousand kids are expected to pitch up on a day that will be full of activities. Children from different schools and clubs including township areas from all around Cape Town will be coming through to Newlands.
KFC Mini Cricket Co-ordinator, Thulani Zideba said, “This year’s festival is set to be the biggest festival Western Province (WP)has ever hosted. The number of interest shown by the schools and cricket clubs all around Cape Town is overwhelming and we hope to make it a huge success.”
He further said “Some of the current Proteas’ players like Thami Tsolekile, AB De Villiers and Vernon Philander came through the ranks of the mini cricket programme and we look forward to continue producing future franchise and international players through this wonderful programme.”
The major aim of KFC Mini Cricket is to provide a game of cricket in its simplest form to young children and at the same time provide enjoyment. Boys play up to nine years old and girls play up to thirteen years old with a purpose of promoting girls cricket in our country.
Western Provincial Cricket First Class Provincial and Western Province Cricket Provincial Women’s players will also be conducting a coaching clinic on the day.
Registration for the day starts at 14h00 and the opening of the KFC Mini Cricket Festival will start soon after. The Festival will finish off around 18h30. Entrance to the stadium is free.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the SA under-19 squad to take part in a quadrangular tournament in India in September this year. The other competing teams other than the hosts are Australia and Zimbabwe.
Four Western Province (WP) cricketers, Dayyaan Galliem, Jason Smith, Hayes van der Berg and Clyde Fortuin were included into the 15-man squad whilst Justin Dill from Boland also gained selection thus making it five Cobras’ players selected in the squad. All these players are also part of the four-day camp that is currently under way at the CSA High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria Sports Complex in preparation for next year’s under-19 World Cup in Dubai.
The last time WP had this kind of selection was in 1998 when current England national player, Jonathan Trott, Andrew Puttick, Thami Tsolekile and Albert Nkomo were then representatives.
Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) General Manager, Nabeal Dien is delighted with the selection of these players, he said “This is the best return we have had in over a decade at SA u-19 level and all involved in the youth structures of WPCA must be proud. We hope these players do well in India to further bolster their chance for final selection to the World Cup in Dubai next year.”
Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) hosted its Annual Awards ceremony on Wednesday, 29 May 2013.
This Annual ceremony focused on celebrating the success of amateur cricket from grassroots level to First Class Provincial level was held at the Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC).
WP First Class Provincial batter, Sybrand Engelbrecht received the WPCA First Class Player of the Year award for his outstanding performance with the bat in the 2012/13 season. He finished the season with an average of 53 and 97 in the three-day and one-day competitions respectively. His 214 runs (not out) against Namibia is the highest individual score nationally.
Division 1A/1B Combined Leagues One Day Competition and Division 1B Two Day Competition winners, Durbanville Cricket Club were awarded with the WPCA Club of the Year award for 2012/13. The club’s second and third team also did tremendously well this season when they were the league winners of their respective leagues in the second division.
On the evening, seven members (Oswold Mama, Terry Eksteen, Abu Desai, William Magijima, Clem Druker, Mathenjwa Ndlumbini and Nico van Oordt) were awarded with the Special Presidential Award in appreciation for their dedication, commitment and services to the game of cricket.
Alexis Le Bretton who in her first season as captain led the WP Women’s cricket team to winning the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Women’s Provincial One-Day Challenge and the CSA Regional 20/20 Competition received the WPCA Women’s Player of the Year award and WP under 19 coach, Clinton Ravens was named WPCA Coach of the Year.

Rondebosch Boys’High School beat Framesby by 68 runs at Coetzenburg on Saturday to win the coastal pool and qualify to play Waterkloof in the final of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge. This will be played at Sahara Park Newlands on Sunday at 11h45.
This was Rondebosch’s second bonus point victory in their four matches and meant that they finished on 14 points, one ahead of Westville who won their final match against St. Andrew’s by four wickets. Rondebosch would have qualified for the final in any event as they had won their pool match against Westville on Friday.
At its Annual General Meeting this week, the Western Province Cricket Association announced a profit of R1,762m for the 2011/12 financial year, against a prior-year loss of R919, 000. Revenue increased by R3,3m while expenses remained in line. Debt was reduced by R1,2m. The WPCA also improved its Balance Sheet position by revaluating the land value of the Newlands Stadium resulting in an increase of property, plant and equipment from R62m to R88m.
Noting that the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras had won their fifth trophy in four seasons and produced new stars such as Vernon Philander and Richard Levi at international level, the President Beresford Williams also announced a focus on grassroots cricket in the coming season.
An allocation of R500 000 has been set aside to help with worthy projects at club level.The WPCA is, moreover, hoping to announce a new sponsor for the club leagues this season. A weekly tv series on Cape Town community TV will also kick off soon, and the WPCA has entered an agreement with Die Son newspaper to increase club cricket’s profile in the print media. Finally, application has been made to the new transformation fund of Cricket South Africa to increase by more than one hundred the numbers of scorers, umpires and coaches amongst women and in African areas. The above will come on top of the R7 million already budgeted for amateur cricket in the province. The President also mentioned that constructive negotiations were underway with the City to improve club facilities, which are crucial to keeping the grassroots game strong.

The 14th annual KFC Mini-Cricket seminar ended on a high note, leaving its 156 delegates looking forward to the next 30 years of the programme. The seminar, which took place from 01 to 04 July at the San Lameer Hotel & Resort on the KZN South Coast saw the country's mini-cricket coaches and co-ordinators gather for a feedback and brain storming session to help plot the way forward for the upcoming season. CSA and KFC also used the opportunity to thank all the often forgotten volunteers and foot soldiers of this essential programme for all their hard work and dedication for the past 30 years.
