Province lost their first two games and were hanging on for dear life but survived against Eastern Province. Subsequently, they won four successive games, including an emphatic victory against KwaZulu-Natal, who are at the summit with 165.7 points, almost 40 ahead of Province on 126.14.
Delving in his archives, Dill represented South Africa in 2014 when he, Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch were the three seam and fast bowlers in a team that won the U19 Cricket World Cup.
A serious elbow injury prevented him from making steadier progress since then, while he also focused on his academic career (B.Comm). He also had to make a choice between his academic program and professional cricket.
After a heart-to-heart conversation with his father, he decided to move from Boland to Western Province and to complete only a few subjects per annum through Unisa.
In his most recent first-class game against Gauteng, Dill showed glimpses of his best form, striking an unbeaten 61 and capturing 2-18.
Dill says the team’s batting line-up was unsettled somewhat in the infancy stage of the tournament.
The top- and middle-order performed much better in the later stages of the campaign and also showed their mettle at WPCC ground, where it is not easy to score on.
The bowling attack has become more consistent and as a unit, has been able to keep the run-rate below three an over, thereby building pressure on the opponents.
That pressure forced opposing teams into fatal errors, which was snaffled by the fielders of Western Province.
Salieg Nackerdien, coach of Western Province, has earmarked Dill as a prospect for the future, not only because of the bounce he creates and his excellent line and lengths, but also because of his industrious work with the blade.
Against South Western District in a match at WP Cricket Club, Dill hopes to produce the type of bowling which made him a standout-performer for South Africa at junior level.
