WP suffered an early collapse when they lost the wicket of captain Pieter Malan (1) in the fourth over and the one of Lesiba Ngoepe (0) eight balls later both to left arm medium-fast Dieter Klein.
Matthew Kleinveldt (50) and Zubyr Hamza (79) stood firm in the crease to recover WP’s innings and together they constructed an 86-run third wicket partnership.
Following the dismissal of Kleinveldt, WP suffered another middle order collapse when they lost the crucial wickets of Jason Smith (0) and Clyde Fortuin (0) both to fast bowler Armandt Erasmus.
All-rounder Shaheen Khan came in and scored and much needed 91 runs off 127 balls to help WP put up a decent first innings’ score of 260 runs in 78 overs.
Klein and Bjorn Fortuin got three wickets apiece and were assisted by Erasmus who returned with 2 wickets for fifty runs in his 16 overs.
Khan (2/10) and Travis Muller (1/44) picked up three quick wickets for their team to reduce NW to 85 runs for three in 21 overs at close of play. They still trail by 175 runs with seven wickets remaining in the first innings.
