The home side won the toss and elected to bat first.
Matthew Kleinveldt and Malan gave WP a solid start when they put together a 110-run opening stand. Kleinveldt fell just two runs short of his half century when he was caught behind off Marcello Piedt for 48. WP lost two further wickets of Lesiba Ngoepe (12) and Zubayr Hamza (0) both to former WP player Siyabulela Simetu in a space of 13 overs.
Young Clyde Fortuin came in to join Malan in the middle and together they constructed a 115-run fourth wicket partnership. It was Piedt who came in once again to break another crucial partnership for WP when he dismissed Fortuin for 62.
Captain Malan was undefeated at 120 when he decided to call for a declaration at 295 for four.
Off the seven overs left for the day’s play, SWD could only manage ten runs for no loss. They trail by 285 runs with ten wickets remaining in the first innings.
