Clinton du Preez, cricket services manager of the WPCA, announced that the WPCA will be seeking sponsorships and assistance so that the WP senior women’s team can embark on an overseas tour within the next two years.
This will be an apt incentive to thank the women for their excellence as ambassadors of cricket in the Province the past five years.
Williams said the International Cricket Council (ICC) implored member countries to increase the contracts of their players to make cricket as a full-time profession even more attractive.
Three members of the current WP squad have been invited to a national camp next month. They are Laura Wolvaardt, Andrie Steyn and Lara Goodall.
The WP team, after training for about six months, are set to play against Border in their opening CSA 50 over and T20 matches of the 2017/2018 season on Saturday and Sunday.
In two pre-season matches, Western Province, winner of nine of the past eleven tournaments, were in excellent form against their neighbours Boland and South Western Districts, said Cobus Roodt, the coach.
They won by seven wickets against Boland and romped to victories by 190 runs and 140 runs against South Western Districts, Roodt said.
He added that the average age of his team is a touch above 20. There is only one veteran, the captain, Alexis le Breton (32), in the team.
Several players are aged between 14 and 22.
Andrie Grobbelaar is 14, Saarah Smith is 18, Steyn is 21 and Goodall is 21.
Despite the dominance of the past, there is no complacency in the team, Roodt said.
In fact, the team has got together for four additional practices each week because there is unfinished business. In the Cricket South Africa week in Bloemfontein in the 2016/2017 season, Western Province did not emerge victorious and they want to atone for that loss and improve on that performance when they assemble for the tournament at the central franchise headquarters, Roodt said.
“The team is in a good head space and the depth at U13, U16 and U19 levels are indicative of our sound pipeline structures,” Roodt said.
