The home side lost the toss and was sent in to bat first.
Out of form Matthew Kleinveldt was the first to be sent back to the changing room after he was caught behind off fast bowler, Zakhele Qwabe for 0. Eight balls later, Taariq Chiecktey’s attempt to steal a quick single failed dismally as he got run out for 4 by Gereldo George thus leaving their team with 7/2 in just 4.3 overs.
Mujahid Behardien and Zubayr Hamza did well to get WP back into the game when they constructed an 86-run third wicket partnership. Off-breaker, Gereldo George came in and gave Boland the breakthrough when he dismissed both Behardien (35) and Hamza (55) in successive overs.
WP suffered another blow when right-hand batter Shaheen Khan had to be retired hurt on 35 for injuring his back while batting and had to be rushed to hospital.
Qwabe and fast bowler Thomas Kannemeyer rocked the middle and lower order to wrap it up for Boland. They finished with figures of 3/40 and 3/41 respectively to reduce WP to 183 all out in 46.3 overs in the first innings.
Mpilo Njoloza dismissed opener Simon Khomari (1) and Grant Edmeades (2) in successive overs to put Boland on the back foot. He went on to dismiss opener Jean Bredenkamp (49) in the 35th over of Boland’s innings to claim his third wicket and was assisted Lizaad Williams and Emmanuel Seberame who finished with 2/19 and 1/12 to limit the visitors to 114 for 6 in 47 overs at close of play. Boland trail by 69 runs with 4 wickets remaining in the first innings.
