The WP u-19 girls beat their counterparts of Northerns in a super over in the final in Port Elizabeth.
Anri Grobbelaar, who smashed 263 runs, Saarah Smith, (261) and Alida van der Merwe (183) were in dominant mood with the bat. The two off-spinners Nadia Mbokotwana and Leanne Eksteen, both grabbed 11 wickets while the fast bowler Christine Tomlinson snatched nine wickets.
Roodt, the consummate team man who always endorses the performance of the eleven instead of highlighting one or two superstars, said the team as a strong collective unit deserve all the praise.
With most of the girls (apart from one) playing senior cricket for Tygerburg, Bellville, Milnerton and other clubs, was a vital factor and the team showed character and displayed excellent team spirit.
“Leah Jones, Smith, Nadia and Anri were selected for the South African Schools team and Van der Merwe and Tomlinson for the SA Fillies team,” he added.
The fact that six players were decorated, speaks volumes of the quality of the team, but every player in the team performed to their potential, which is a credit to the team spirit, added Roodt.
The Western Province u-16 team achieved three wins, while the Western Province u-13 squad, in their maiden appearance, was victorious in one match.
Roodt was crowned coach of the year at the Western Province Cricket Association’s awards evening in 2016/2017.
