A stalwart member of the St. Augustine’s Club he served as chairman of his club for many years and as vice-president of the Western Province Cricket Board as the right-hand man of legendary president, the late Hassan Howa. He was honorary life president of St. Augustine’s and an honorary life member of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA).
He was manager of the Western Province Cricket Board provincial team that achieved considerable success during the 1970s and 80s.
He was still very active in cricket and community affairs and participated in the ceremony on Monday evening when his club conferred life membership on two of his protégés, Beresford Williams (current president of the WPCA) and Shawn Christensen (who chaired CSA’s Independent Nominations Committee last year).
“This is a huge loss to cricket generally and to the community in which he lived,” commented CSA Acting CEO Naasei Appiah. “He gave a lifetime of service to the game that he loved and he would always give willingly of his time, his knowledge and his experiences to others. On behalf of the CSA family I extend deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.”
WPCA President Beresford Williams commented: “On behalf of the Western Province Cricket Association cricket family, I extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends on this huge loss at this very difficult time. He will be sorely missed and was indeed a legend and champion of the values of non-discrimination and human rights for all. He will be remembered particularly for always championing the needs of the most disadvantaged members of the community.
“From a personal point of view I owe him a great deal for his mentorship of my own career as a cricket administrator.”
He is survived by his wife, three sons, his daughters and his grandchildren.
Mr. Saville will be buried on Tuesday, 12 March 2013, the church service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church (6 Brent Roadh, Plumstead). Viewing will be at 13h30 and the service will commence at 14h00.
