WP Head Coach, Paul Adams, has acknowledged the fact that it has been a while since the group of players have had sufficient time to prepare for this format of the game and is confident this will have an impact on the results.
“I believe we have had enough time to prepare for our opponents and also focus on specific things that we feel the team, as a whole, lacked in the previous season,” he stated.
“Both batters & bowlers went through their paces out on the field with a couple of friendly fixtures to enhance the levels of training.”
“We have a couple of games on the trot, so it is important that we stamp our authority and try to compete for silverware in all competitions,” he added.
Even though injuries have hampered some of the key players in the side, that has not dampened the spirits of Adams and his troops as this has paved the way for opportunities for other youngsters to showcase their skill-set and talents.
“Obviously, with the hard work of the few weeks, there has been a few niggles – here and there - but what has impressed us is the commitment of the players and some of the youngsters raising their hands when given the opportunities,” Adams concluded.
The rivalry against the Tshwane outfit has always been a tense but thrilling encounter with both fixtures, last season, going down to the wire.
The sides settled for a draw in the three-day encounter while Northerns edged Province in the one-day match in a close finish.
“With the first game being on Thursday, it is vital that get we get the ball rolling with some wins under our belt and this is what we intend to do in the opener against Northerns,” said WP leg-spinner Junaid Dawood.
“The first game will not be a walk in the park, but I am confident that if we do come out firing, with both bat and ball, we can attain victory and look to carry the momentum into the other games.”, he concluded.
The visitors have acquired the services of new head coach, Geoffery Toyana, who will tackle his first major assignment of the season Newlands.
The hosts, Western Province, will play successive games - after this fixture - against North West and Free State, concluding the first round of fixtures in the CSA Provincial Three-Day competition.
