“I recalled he scored a number of centuries and fifties during his careeer,” Mama (jr) said.
“As his four children, we remember him with fondness as a humble, kind-hearted and hardworking man.
“He was involved in business development with Barclays Bank and after that he went to Sanlam as a business developer before he retired,” he said.
As a cricketer, he was the captain of Home Bachelors in Langa and after the amalgamation of several clubs in the area to form the Langa Cricket Club, he also captained the township.
He also played for the SACOS cricket team at the Green Point Track for a while before returning to Langa.
As a Western Province rugby player, he was a nifty and brilliant flyhalf.
“We want to express our sincere condolences with the passing of Oswald Mama. We honour the contribution he made to the growth and expansion of the game in the townships and his leadership role and infectious spirit,” said Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of the Western Province Cricket Association.
His funeral will be on 27th October at 10:00 at the Langa Methodist Church.
