They have restored their self-respect and have re-affirmed to all-comers that they are championship winning material.
Dane Piedt, the stand-in captain after Zubayr Hamza was promoted to the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras’ ranks, said the innings of 97 by Matthew Kleinveldt was the undoubted highlight of the match.
He was also very impressed with Justin Dill and with his contribution to the eventual triumph.
“I am glad I had an opportunity to play in the Sunfoil Three-Day Cup and see the young players like Dill and Michael Cohen in action. The average age of the team is less than 25 – perhaps 22 or 23. And Dill swung the ball both ways and he got nip both ways. He reminded one a bit of Mohammad Asif. Interestingly enough, when I asked him who he idolized as a cricketer,” he said it was Asif.” said Piedt.
Piedt was also full of praise for Cohen, who finished with a match haul of 6-50.
“I used him in short spell and he produced a couple of thunderbolts and rockets,” Piedt said.
“I was able to put in a short leg and short gully for his bowling.
“When one looks at the last game he bowled for the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras, and this win against Northerns, he has definitely improved and the biggest change was the better control he displayed,” said Piedt.
Piedt, a national off-spinner, said he used his own variations – the Doosrah and the Carrom ball – well during the match and he was able to perform the holding role well in the first innings to keep the Northerns batsmen rooted to their crease. He took 3-63 in 28 overs to limit the visitors at the WPCC.
In the second innings, Piedt nipped out 4-10 in 7.5 overs.
He used his attacking fifth-stump line – outside the off-stump – well and the pick of the deliveries was bowling an opponent through the gate. He also achieved two leg-before-decisions.
One of the things Piedt prides himself on, is his competency with the Carrom ball and the Doosrah.
The Carrom ball is released by flicking it between the thumb and a bent middle finger in order to impart spin, while the Doosra is the off-spinner’s googly which spins in the opposite direction to the off-break.
Piedt, the Sunfoil Series captain of the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras, said in a team indaba before the match that the players should step up and utilize the opportunity to press for World Sports Betting Cape Cobras honours.
On the evidence of what he has seen in the win against Northerns, it seems that there are at least two fast bowlers who will challenge the incumbents in the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras’ squad – Dill and Cohen.
Piedt also gave the selectors a pleasant reminder of his skills-set with his match-winning haul of 7 for 73.
He saluted the efforts by Salieg Nackerdien, who worked meticulously to instil the right culture and work-ethic in the team.
